About Palo Alto Dermatology Institute

Nationally-renowned medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology in Palo Alto

Palo Alto Dermatology Institute at 301 High Street in downtown Palo Alto is the brainchild of nationally-recognized Mohs and cosmetic dermatologic surgeon Greg S. Morganroth, MD. Our Institute’s innovative and one-of-a-kind approach to dermatology, dermatologic surgery, and patient-centric care evolved from his unique and distinctive thirty-year practice journey in Silicon Valley.

In 1995, Dr. Morganroth moved to Palo Alto after completing his dermatology training on the East Coast. Shortly thereafter, he started his private practice of Mohs and dermatologic surgery in Mountain View. While living in downtown Palo Alto, he admired a non-descript, tilt-up concrete building with a large parking lot at 301 High Street that he passed as he entered and exited the city. As a new doctor starting from scratch, he could only dream about having an office in downtown Palo Alto in such a perfect location. Over the first decade of his practice, Dr. Morganroth built a nationally recognized Mohs, reconstructive, and cosmetic surgery practice in Mountain View with a reputation for innovation, a strong Mohs fellowship training program, and outstanding surgical outcomes. He was an innovator of facial reconstruction techniques, cosmetic laser surgery, local anesthesia cosmetic surgery, the Vertical Vector Facelift, and he trained dermatologists and Stanford facial plastic surgery fellows in his techniques.

During the second decade of practice, Dr. Morganroth expanded his single-location practice, California Skin Institute, by merging over 25 outstanding dermatology practices in Northern California from Santa Rosa to Monterey. Most of these dermatology practices had been referring Mohs and cosmetic surgeries to Dr. Morganroth for years and wished to benefit from the synergies of his growing practice. Michelle Quinn, NP, was the first dermatology provider to join him in 2007 and continues today in Palo Alto as a key clinical collaborator in skin cancer diagnosis and surveillance.

Over the third decade, while working full-time as a Mohs and cosmetic dermatologic surgeon, Dr. Morganroth grew California Skin Institute into the largest physician-owned and controlled dermatology and cosmetic surgery practice in the United States, with 48 locations and over 450 employees in Northern and Southern California. During this phase, board-certified dermatologists Linda Sheu, MD and Rebecca Chen, MD, and his dermatologic surgery partner, Chandni Patel, PA-C, joined to complete his comprehensive dermatology care team. Palo Alto Dermatology Institute’s team approach is a unique practice model where patients are cared for by a team of dermatologists and physician extenders whose skills and experience complement each other to create a synergistic and unparalleled level of care.

Although the merger of over 60 practices for a single physician owner was unprecedented and rewarding, Dr. Morganroth found greater satisfaction in the relationships he formed with patients and his close clinical team versus managing a large dermatology company with 48 offices. Recently, reflecting on the next phase of his dermatologic surgery career, Dr. Morganroth decided to focus on his true passion for the art of dermatologic surgery and his desire to create an exceptional patient experience. To that end, in early 2025, Dr. Morganroth transferred ownership of California Skin Institute to a large private equity-backed East Coast dermatology group under the condition that he and his accomplished Mountain View team of physicians, physician extenders, and staff could leave and form this independent practice in Palo Alto.

Palo Alto Dermatology Institute represents the culmination of Dr. Morganroth’s three-decade dermatology career that has come around full circle to a single office location at 301 High Street—the same building he first admired 30 years earlier. Our practice logo is an homage to a prominent architectural feature of our purposely redesigned two-story building that reflects our vision for the future of dermatology. Our highly experienced dermatology team of six clinicians and 28 staff will focus 100% of our energy and imagination to create an extraordinary, one-of-a-kind practice that combines state-of-the-art surgical techniques and medical treatments with unprecedented five star hospitality and personal service for the patients who entrust us with their care.
