A Team Approach to Care

The field of dermatology encompasses a broad range of sub-specialties including complex medical dermatology, surgical dermatology, cosmetic dermatology, Mohs surgery and cutaneous oncology, pediatric dermatology, immunodermatology, dermatopathology, consultative inpatient dermatology, and research and clinical trial dermatology.  It is virtually impossible for a single dermatologist to master all of these subspecialities.

The typical patient-dermatologist relationship consists of a single dermatologist who attempts to manage all medical, surgical and cosmetic skin-related issues as a generalist.  On occasion, the dermatologist may refer the patient to another dermatology specialist for surgery or complex medical conditions after their treatment efforts are exhausted.

In contrast, at Palo Alto Dermatology Institute patients are co-managed by multiple dermatology providers to access the high level of expertise of each team member.  This collaboration is often at the same visit, either planned ahead of time or a last minute consultation during the office visit.  Our collaboration center located on the second floor at the center of the clinic space is a 500 sq ft glass-enclosed center where our dermatologists, dermatology physician extenders and staff work alongside each other to optimize patient care.  Similar to an exhibition caseback (sapphire instead of metal backing of a watch case) where one can view the inner workings of a fine watch, the glass enclosed collaboration room allows patients to see the inner workings of the fine staff at Palo Alto Dermatology Institute.

For example, a skin cancer patient seen by Dr. Morganroth for Mohs surgery for a complicated skin cancer on the nose may have other skin issues such as eczema and a fungal infection of their nails.  While Dr. Morganroth is an expert at skin cancer diagnosis and treatment, his dermatology colleagues have more expertise with the newest treatment options for eczema and nail fungus.  On the same visit where Dr. Morganroth discusses the Mohs surgery and reconstruction options, his dermatology partners will address the treatment options for the patient’s eczema and nail fungus.

Our goal is to provide our patients with the most efficient, effective and comprehensive dermatologic care.  We believe our collaborative care model is the optimal solution for excellent patient outcomes and the fastest pathway from diagnosis to treatment for our skin cancer patients.
