Earlobe Repair

Ear lobe repair is a surgical procedure designed to correct and reconstruct damaged or stretched ear lobes from earrings, previous cosmetic surgery, or keloids (thickened scars of greater than one year duration). The ear lobes are a prominent and visible part of the ears that can be easily affected by various factors, leading to tears, stretching, or deformities. At Palo Alto Dermatology Institute, we specialize in precise and minimally invasive ear lobe repair techniques under local anesthesia to restore the natural appearance of the ear lobes, helping patients feel more confident in their overall appearance.

Ear lobe repair is a minor surgical or laser procedure aimed at reconstructing the shape and contour of the ear lobe. The procedure is commonly performed to repair issues such as:

  1. Torn or Split Ear Lobes: Tears in the ear lobe can occur due to sudden force or prolonged stress on the ear, often from earrings being pulled. A split can also happen gradually as the ear lobe tissue becomes weaker over time. This can cause discomfort, make it difficult to wear earrings, and affect the aesthetic appearance of the ear. Ear lobe repair restores the ear lobe’s natural shape, allowing patients to wear earrings comfortably again.
  2. Stretched or Elongated Ear Lobes: Heavy earrings or the use of ear gauges can lead to significant stretching of the ear lobes, leaving them elongated or with large holes. For individuals who wish to restore their ear lobes to a more natural appearance, ear lobe repair can effectively close and reshape these stretched areas.
  3. Irregular Ear Lobe Shape: Some people have ear lobes that are naturally asymmetrical or have congenital deformities that they would like to correct. Ear lobe repair can address these issues, providing a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing appearance.
  4. Revision Surgery: Patients who have previously undergone ear lobe repair, face lift, or neck lift surgery but are dissatisfied with the resulting ear lobe distortion may opt for a revision procedure. This can refine the outcome, improving symmetry and appearance.

During an ear lobe repair procedure at Palo Alto Dermatology Institute, our skilled dermatologists will carefully examine the ear lobe, discuss the desired results, and customize a treatment plan tailored to the patient’s needs.

The surgery is an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia and typically involves removing any scar tissue, reshaping the skin, and suturing the area to promote proper healing.

The procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes, and patients can return to their normal activities the same day. Recovery is straightforward, with mild discomfort and swelling that subsides within a few days. If laser resurfacing is utilized, pinkness may persist for a number f weeks as the skin collagen remodels.  After healing, the ear lobes will appear improved and natural and can be pierced again if desired, usually after a waiting period of 6 to 8 weeks. Ear piercing should be done adjacent to the repair scar and not within it.  Ear lobe repair is a straightforward outpatient procedure with minimal downtime, making it a popular choice for individuals seeking to correct ear lobe damage.
